PLEASE NOTE: The past few years have been difficult for many members of the printing industry. Between the sluggish economy and the technical changes taking place in publishing, many printers have merged or otherwise changed status. Always check the printer's web site to ensure that you have the latest information.

Note: The use of (DIGITAL)by a printer's name indicates that they offer digital printing. Such printers may or may not also offer offset printing. This is intended as a convenience for those specifically seeking digital printing services. Since printers can change their service offerings at any time, it is important to check the printer's web site for the latest service offerings.

Book Printers
Choosing a Printer

The number one mistake that a new independent publisher can make is to go to the local "Mom & Pop Quickie Print" shop to get quotes on printing a book.

Printers are all taught: Never turn down a job (if at all possible). The printer will smile, tell you, "Sure, we do this kind of job all the time." And then take down all the specifications and information so he can find a printer who can really do the job. Of course, Mom & Pop will add a 30-50% markup to the price quoted by the "real" printer. You will think that book printing is terribly expensive! Of course, you may want to establish a relationship with a local printer for fliers, mailers, and stationery. Your local printer can efficiently help you with many projects that you will need for your business--just be aware of their capabilities, staff skills, and equipment. You can also use this good relationship when you need some general printing advice or to check out ink colors on a PMS color chart.

The reality: Out of some 50,000 printers in the U.S., there are about 100 printers that either specialize in printing books or where printing books make up a significant portion of their work. Since these printers are specifically equipped to print books (and very little else) they can print your book very efficiently and deliver them to you at a price far lower than anything that a local print shop can ever do--even with the transportation charges across the country.

How much? On any given day, almost any printer can beat the price of any other printer. Every print job is a custom production run. Printing prices vary by the nature of the project and the amount of work in the shop. If the shop is fully scheduled, the print price is likely to be somewhat higher than if their schedule is empty. Printers have high overhead and are also in danger of losing skilled workers if they don't keep them adequately busy (i.e. paid). Therefore, you should submit a Request for Quotation (RFQ) to a reasonable selection of printers specializing in books. Drop only those printers from your mailing list that you know can't perform efficient or satisfactory work on your book. (For example, don't submit RFQs for a book with a 10 x 14 trim size to printers who specify nothing over 9 x 12.) [Follow this link for an annotated example of an RFQ.]

Covers
While it's generally more convenient to print your cover with the same shop printing the interior pages of your book, There are some circumstances where you may wish to print your covers at a different shop. Ask the book printer to bid on the cover as a separate item so you can compare the cost with non-book printers who may specialize in 4-color work. If you have an elaborate cover (perhaps with foil stamping, embossing, and/or other features), the book printer may not be able to efficiently produce the cover for you. Always schedule the covers to be completed before the book and allow a generous time for shipping, if necessary. The book printer (usually) will perform the bindery operations and will need to have the covers on hand before the books can be finished. Do not have the covers trimmed to size before bindery! Let the printer performing the bindery trim the covers to the appropriate size for the machinery being used. Print a generous extra supply of covers. Some covers will be lost during the bindery process. The "leftovers" can be used in your media kits and can be printed on the back by your "local" print shop (and trimmed) to be used as (oversized) post cards or hand outs for book shows, etc.

What if there are problems?
No printer ever sets out to do a bad job. If problems do arise, first let your Customer Service Representative (CSR) try to solve the problem. If the CSR is unable to give you satisfaction, then be sure you talk to an owner or manager who has decision making authority. Usually a negotiation will result in a satisfactory outcome. Before you complain, think about the situation and what it will take to fairly settle the issue. Printers are generally reluctant to give a refund, especially beyond the pro-rata unit cost of the project. Often a printer would rather re-run all or part of a job rather than give a refund--and this is usually the preferred outcome in any event. Keep in mind, there is a saying in the printing business: if a job is good enough to keep... it's good enough to pay for.

Danger Signs
Be very careful when dealing with new CSRs (ask how long they've been with the printer)--they may make promises they simply can't keep. (After the job is accepted, call and talk with the production manager to verify the schedule and ensure that everything is in order.) Be sure to get a written confirmation of the price and specifications for your job. If you change any specification, no matter how small, be sure to get a new written confirmation reflecting the change. Sometimes a seemingly small change may cause the price to change by a substantial amount--you may need to re-bid the project in these circumstances.

Any printer that has recently changed owners or senior managers may have problems. (It takes time for an owner or manager to understand a particular operation and it takes time to build the teamwork relationship that results in good quality.) Get recommendations from other independent publishers; but be aware that you will get both good and bad references on any given printer. (No one is perfect and even the best printers occasionally have a "job from hell" where everything that can go wrong, does.)

Print Brokers
A good print broker may get you a better deal than you would get by yourself. A bad print broker may cause you to wish you had never lived. Tread with caution. Some print brokers, rather than checking with their 'usual' printers, take in the job, promise you a good price, then try to place the job with a printer who will do the job at the lowest price. Brokers may purchase odd lots of bargain paper that may result in a poor print job. A broker may emphasize the wrong factors--may demand the printer turn the job around quickly, when you'd rather they take a little more time to ensure top quality. Brokers may place your job with a distant printer then find that the cost of transportation is (much) higher than they assumed or you may be billed for transportation without warning. Brokers will blame all problems on the printer, then disappear when the printer blames the problem on the broker--you may end up dissatisfied and have an expensive problem. Generally, you should avoid brokers, except with overseas printing orders (usually 4-color jobs). If you shop carefully for a printer and develop good relationships with your printer(s), you can usually do much better on your own than by using a broker.

A Word About "Printing On Demand" (POD)

An often confusing term "POD" has been applied to one of several printing/publishing processes. First there are publishing firms (usually) with a strong Internet presence. These services may call themselves "self-publishing companies" or "POD publishers." Often they will offer to "publish" a book for you and will provide production services in addition to printing. These "POD Publishers" frequently offer some sort of (minimal) marketing and distribution services. While this has a certain appeal, and may well be appropriate for some projects, you need to exercise caution to ensure that you are paying for and receiving the services you really need. Read all agreements carefully as they sometimes have 'nasty' aspects that may cause needless headaches later on. (Check the National Writer's Union web site for commentary about specific publisher contracts. Use the link "Contract Advice" in the table of contents in the left-hand column.)

The typical "self-publishing company" subsidy publishing agreement will have up front charges of $300 or more (sometimes way more) and will offer a variety of services, including page layout and cover design. I will note that the book interior design and typography is often of mediocre quality. Covers are usually a "formula" design (you get to choose "style 'A' or 'B'"). Be sure that you can continue to use a cover design if you decide to "graduate" from an online POD subsidy publisher. (See also Ivan Hoffman's excellent web site that discusses many legal issues for small publishers.)

These notes aren't intended to be a complete critique of the online POD subsidy publishers. The intent is to suggest that you carefully check publishing agreements, do your homework, and check any agreements with the National Writers Union or the intellectual property lawyer of your choice to ensure that you aren't signing up for something that's unreasonable. Also see my article about vanity or subsidy publishers elsewhere on this web site.

The second meaning of "POD" is a true "print a book for each order received." The largest purveyor of such service is Lightning Source (LSI), a sister company to Ingram Book Wholesalers. With Lighting Source (and other similar services) you are treated as the publisher; while Lightning Source is a printer with an associated distribution function. Books prepared by LSI will be automatically listed in the Ingram book distribution data base, so any retail bookseller can easily find and order your book. (Which will be printed to fill the order. No books are warehoused except as an electronic file.) The downside of this is that "POD" books produced by LSI are not returnable (by the booksellers) and therefore are only ordered when the bookstore has a confirmed order from a customer. This does nothing to get your book on display in bookstores. You also have an option to make LSI printed books fully returnable, but you will need to guarantee payment for the printing of returned books. You can possibly use Lightning Source as a part of your marketing plan, if for no other purpose than to simply be assured that your book is in the Ingram data base. Lightning Source charges various set-up fees based on the preparation work required to get your book into the system, but is, in general, a relatively economical digital book printer.

The third meaning of "POD" is as a description of a digital printing service (usually using a toner-based duplication process) in contrast to a printer using the traditional offset press. Digital printing has minimal set-up cost as compared to traditional offset printing, however the unit cost of production does not decrease significantly after the first copy is printed. With traditional offset printing, much of the cost is in the set-up and plate making process. Once the press is running, the incremental cost of each additional copy is actually quite low. While a particular job might cost $3.50 per copy from a digital printer, it might cost only $0.85 per copy on a press. But the digital printer may only have $50 (or so) in set up costs to absorb in the job while the traditional printer is likely to have $500 to $1,000 in set-up costs on the same job. These economic differences generally suggest that it is more cost effective to print 500 or fewer copies with digital (POD) printing and that 1000 or more copies should be produced with offset printing equipment. In between 500 and 1000 copies, it's usually best to get quotes from both digital and offset printers.

Dan Poynter has coined the term "PQN" (Print Quantity Needed) as an alternate acronym to apply to this third meaning of POD. PQN follows the model of printing only a very small number of books, as needed, to fill immediate demand rather than printing a longer run of books in the traditional manner. Depending on the aspects of the particular project, this may prove more cost effective when you calculate all the costs of the investment in producing, shipping, and holding inventory. At the very least, a "PQN" run at an early stage will allow you to establish what, if any, market interest there might be for your book without committing to the large investment that printing several thousand copies would involve. Most POD (or PQN) printers either do not charge a set-up fee or have such fees of less than $100. If you encounter a POD/PQN printer with a set-up charge, be sure to compare the total cost of the order to a printer without such a charge.

List of Book Printers
These are printers specializing in books that I've identified. Some of them may offer Digital Printing Service services in addition to 'regular' printing or exclusively offer digital printing. Those printers that specifically offer digital printing have been flagged with a "(DIGITAL)" in their entry--be sure to inquire, as other printers may also offer digital printing, but available information when this list was last updated did not specifically mention it. Although a few offset printers have established digital printing services in-house, many other offset printers use third party digital printers for their digital printing production. It pays to ask where digital production will occur, as those who subcontract may not be able to offer the lowest prices for digital service.

Digital printing is usually most appropriate for ultra-short-run printing. In general, quantities of 1 to 500 copies will be most economically printed with digital printing. Over 1000 copies, is generally more economical with offset printing. Between 500 and 1000 copies, either may prove more economical depending on the actual specifications of the book, so it's best to offer RFQs to both types of printers. Indeed, as digital equipment improves, the crossover threshold has moved up. Some jobs, up to 3000 copies have proved competitive when printed digitally. It pays to shop around. Remember, too, that freight costs play a role, so be sure to compare the delivered cost of various alternatives, not just the cost of printing.

Disclaimer

No recommendation is meant or intended by the presence or absence of any particular printer from this list; nor is any recommendation meant by any comment associated with any particular printer. Some of the listed printers are located in Canada, others are located in Asia or elsewhere overseas. Be aware that there may be currency, transportation, and customs issues involved in using a printer outside the United States--be sure to explore and understand all such issues before you place an order.

If you know of a printer, not included in this list, that specializes in book printing please send full details to info@aeonix.com

Note: We make every effort to ensure up-to-date email addresses and URL links. However, the nature of the Internet is that such things are subject to frequent changes. If an email address doesn't work, please try following the URL to the printer's web site and contact them through the means they provide or submit an estimate with their online form, if any.

The idea was that printers, whose owners may be nearing retirement age, would wish to sell their business and that the combination would generate certain efficiencies of scale. The company has a total of 5487 employees and annual sales of about one billion U.S. dollars. Each 'unit' is operated in a semi-autonomous manner, though there is some coordination between units on some projects.

B

Often we have to produce books under very tight schedules and we only work where we know schedules can be met. Our printers enjoy working with us, and know we demand the highest quality. We typically produce museum quality art and photography books including duotone, tritone and quadtone black and white photography books and demanding university press art books. Because we are small and flexible, we have been able to stay competitive against much larger broker companies and printing offices.

Every job is handled with individual attention and care. We make sure your materials have been submitted properly so that you will not be disappointed in the final results, and go over the process with you very carefully so you understand what is needed and what to expect. We can become involved at any stage, from concept to final artwork ready for the printer. We manage the project from the moment it appears, and don't let go until the books are safely delivered to your storage facility.

We love printing -- and it shows!

This company offers a "one-stop" resource to the small press and independent self-publisher. "Instant" printing prices are offered via the Internet for several popular trim sizes in page counts from 64 to 608 and in quantities from 100 to 10,000. Unlike the parent company (R.J. Communications-see below) that acts as a direct representative for a group of complementing companies (i.e. a print broker), BooksJustBooks.com is a true buying service. Press time is bought in "bulk" and resold at or below the general market price. This is a unique business model and is worth exploring.

BooksJustBooks.com also offers full color printing (in the U.S.), often at surprisingly competitive rates.

Taking advantage of the new challenges brought by the economy globalization and the new opportunities coming with China's entry in WTO, the company began to expand the domestic market in 1997 and work out a series of plans of marketing development. Besides the headquarters in Hong Kong, we established Heshan Ching Luen Print Company Ltd. In Guangdong Province. And the offices in America and Guangzhou China were set up respectively to supply the professional services to the customers inland and overseas.

With that attitude and the advantages of management, equipment and technology, we will supply you with perfect printed products no matter they are books, packaging boxes, tapes, labels, calendars, posters, or booklets and catalogs of enterprises.

This is a publisher who specializes in Christian materials as well as a commercial printer that has a Printing On Demand operation. Due to the religious aspect, some controversial materials may not be welcome. Inquire first if you have any doubt.

BOD (Books On Demand), the book manufacturing division of CSS Publishing Company, knows the publishing business and the printing business. We know that publishing costs involve much more than just printing expenses. We believe that by helping you to know what your publishing costs are, we can help make your operation become more efficient and profitable.

BOD understands that a slightly higher per unit cost may actually save you money in the end, if it allows you to maximize your sales and minimize your inventory costs. It is practical to increase your profits and actually sell fewer books when the costs of inventory, remainders and returns are factored into the equation.

Combining traditional offset technology to produce quality covers, with the latest in digital printing technology for text printing, BOD is the intelligent choice when it comes to producing short runs and controlling inventory. More than just a good printing solution, BOD is a good business solution.

In 1914 Byron Dome founded Dome Engraving, servicing local printers and newspapers with their type blocks and lithography plates. A noble history that would be continued when in 1969 Ray Poole incorporated Dome Printing and made the advancement into an offset printing facility.

Over the past three decades the business has become one of the largest privately held commercial printing companies in Northern California. In 2004 the Poole brothers Tim, Andy and Bob purchased the company from their father and continue to offer customers the best in service and quality.

Great Impressions started producing books approximately fifteen years ago. We started with the mission of producing high-quality books for the religious community. Over the years, we have developed additional relationships which resulted in our also servicing the corporate community and a great many self-published authors. Today we are a complete service company.
We became associated with Logan Graphics, Inc. as some of our customers had needs in addition to book production. With the development of digital copying, it became apparent that some of our customers might also have needs for very short run books, hence our association with RFP Management. Our ability to completely service our customers sets us apart from product-specific printers and our ability to make friends with our customers has enabled us to change to meet their needs.

We also have the distinction of having a full in-house bindery, unlike most of our competitors who have to outsource their bindery work.

As a publisher and practicing graphic designer, Raoul Goff found himself returning again and again to Asia in search of the highest quality book production. Goff learned from experience that the most outstanding results could be achieved for roughly half the cost of high quality printing elsewhere, and founded Palace Press International as a means of providing U.S. publishers access to the technology, craftsmanship, and savings of the Asian print industry.

Printcrafters has been printing quality books since 1996. Equipment ranges from digital Xerox equipment to 5, 6 and 10 color Heidelberg offset presses, enabling us to offer short run digital to longer run offset both in b/w and full color. Efficient print runs start as low as 50 and as high as 25,000. Perfect binding, saddlestitching and plasticoil binding are all done in-house. We are an environmentally conscious printer with FSC certification and manufacturing processes that include plate, paper and chemical recycling. We utilize a paper waste collection system that connects to all bindery equipment and baler in order to reduce dust in the plant – resulting in cleaner equipment, working environment and cleaner product. The baled paper waste takes up less space so that our disposal to recyclers is less frequent. In addition, we also have an on-site chemical distiller to reclaim and reuse a high percentage of the press chemical which reduces our hazardous waste. Winnipeg is located in central Canada which makes it a natural shipping hub. We ship daily throughout Canada & the United States.

Printegration offers you the latest in offset lithography, letterpress and digital printing ...and some of the best craftsmen in Virginia.

Our sheet-fed presses remain the industry standard for high quality color printing. And our digital presses are perfect when your job is short and so is turnaround time. We acclimate our paper and materials to our environment, to give us better control and to give you enhanced quality.

We also offer variable digital printing, with a host of specialized applications. In addition to names and addresses, data such as past behaviors, recent transactions and a variety of other important and personal information can be used to make your mailing a highly-effective "conversation" with your prospect or customer. Even the color images in your mailing can be variables; to make your message as individual as your audience.

Founded in 1971, Printing & Publishing Company Botswana can be proud of the fact that as Botswana has developed, so have we. From small beginnings and a staff complement of less that 10 people, we have grown into the largest, best-equipped and most versatile printing establishment in Botswana.

With our staff compliment now exceeding 250, with many more employed in our associate companies, we are one of the largest employers in the local printing industry. Having contributed significantly to the training of many of the staff now employed at other printers not only have we grown, but our ex-staff now contribute to the growth of the industry country-wide.

Due to our geographical situation we are able to deliver into neighboring countries such as South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.

NOTE:
This is a printer located outside the U.S. market. It is listed for the convenience of our overseas visitors. It is probably not an appropriate printing choice for North American publishers. Please take note of the region, as indicated, that is served by this printer.

We're experts in producing books that your local printer typically can not handle in terms of turnaround or sheer size. There are very few printers in the U.S. who can handle 1000 copies of a 1,700 page book and deliver it to any place in about ten working days. Our niche is book projects that range in page counts from 100 up to 1,700 and quantities from 50 to 5,000 copies.

SNP Corporation Ltd (SNP) grew out of Singapore National Printers Pte Ltd which in turn had its origin in the former Government Printing Office.

Operations began in 1867 when the General Printing Office was set up to produce Gazettes and other official publications for the government. In 1973, Singapore National Printers Pte Ltd was incorporated to take over the role of the Government Printer. Since then, SNP has been operating on a commercial basis.

In 1987, SNP went public and became the first company to be listed on the Sesdaq (the Stock Exchange of Singapore Dealing and Automated Quotation System). In 1990, SNP was upgraded to the Mainboard of the Singapore Exchange and has since grown to become one of the leading media groups in Asia.

In recent years, SNP has transformed itself from a Singapore-based, Singapore market-centric company to one which has established beachheads in various markets in the Asia Pacific. SNP's core businesses in printing have expanded regionally with a network of eight principal subsidiaries. Two are based in Singapore, five in Greater China and the other in Thailand.

We specialize in creating every conceivable possibility with paper, through our printing, binding and packaging capabilities. In our hands and mind-fields of innovation, every piece of paper, shade of color and shape becomes a distinct possibilities for creation.

Every creation is backed by a vibrant and rich heritage of experience, total service, commitment, spirit of excellence and innovation that cannot be surpassed.

With a humble beginning in 1935, Tien Wah has since evolved into the leader that we are today. A member of the Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) Group of Companies, we serve a worldwide clientele of leading publishers and specialty producers. 70 years ago, we were Tien Wah, a family-run letterpress business in Singapore. The close of World War II triggered a surge in demand for books and other printed materials. From the start, we were determined to be innovators to stay on the cutting edge of everything we set our minds to do, including technology. This spirit of adventure and innovation catapulted us into the production of bound books. We have never looked back since then.

Today, we have the distinct privilege of being one of the first printers in the world to create pop-up books and book-plus or specialty products. 90% of our production is sent overseas -- we serve a worldwide market; we satisfy a universe of needs. Today, we are still Tien Wah... "The Last Word in Printing."

Total Printing Systems is a family owned business, established in 1973. Originally founded to produce commercial printing, Total Printing Systems has expanded to include books and other publications. Located in Newton, IL, Total Printing Systems utilizes and greatly benefits from the modest cost of rural community living as well as having a work force comprised of dedicated employees driven by a strong Midwestern work ethic. Total Printing Systems has diversified sheetfed and web press lines, plus a bindery department that provides a full range of mechanical binding, saddle stitch, loose leaf and perfect binding. We round out our capabilities with prompt shipping, fulfillment and storage.

Total Printing Systems also uses a Kodak VersaMark Digital Press. This is an interesting, and unusual, digital press that uses a super-high-speed ink jet process. It is much less expensive (for digital print production) than toner-based digital presses, however, the print quality isn't quite as crisp as the better toner based systems. These ink-jet presses allow much lower costs for digital run quantities. However, the equipment is incredibly expensive, so these won't be showing up at your local Kinko's anytime soon. Ask for a sample book and see what you think.

For more than thirty years, Webcom (the 14th largest book printer in North America in 2007) has built a reputation for providing our customers with innovative solutions to their challenges of printing books, catalogs and directories. From the start we have employed new technologies to help drive our customers’ business – producing quality books, quickly and efficiently. The breadth of our services from initial planning and prepress to binding and distribution benefit a diverse range of publishers and businesses across North America.

Our definition of a better book includes not only the final product but everything that goes into making it. It’s a philosophy that can be summed up in a single word: efficiency. We apply whatever process or technology makes the most sense for the specific needs of the book production project. That can mean either digital on-demand or conventional offset printing. Our web presses enable fast set-up and minimal paper waste. Our award-winning four-colour printing uses coldset process to avoid harmful VOCs while still providing customers with a competitive edge.
